Top Ten Must-See Local Attractions
Oakland Coliseum
Sports enthusiasts can revel every season of the year in a variety of professional sports. The sparkling Oakland Coliseum complex houses the Oakland Athletics of MLB, Oakland Raiders of NFL, and the Golden State Warriors of NBA fame. San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS large-attendance games have also played here in the past. We are one of the closest hotels near the Oakland Coliseum and a great place to stay if you are in town for non-sports activities as well.
Jack London Square
Few visitors to Oakland leave without seeing the historic, retail and office venues
that make up Jack London Square. Most are captivated by the cabin that is a re-creation of
one that noted author, Jack London, resided in the Klondike. Many are delighted to sit in
Heinold’s Saloon, built from a whaling ship’s remains in 1883, where Mr. London enjoyed many
adventures in his younger years, and returned to later in life to revise novels such as “Call of
the Wild” or sailor stories such as “Sea Wolf”.
Port of Oakland, Downtown and Historic Sites
This important area, which includes the Oakland International Airport,
is the fourth busiest container port in the United States. Visitors can
relax on one of the monthly harbor tours. If they’re here in October, they
would be able to honor the memory of the black cowboys who helped settle West
America in a parade-celebration that is the only one of its kind in the nation.
Chinatown
Oakland’s Chinatown might not be as touristy as San Francisco’s. But, dating back to the 1850s, it is one of
the oldest in North America. You won’t be disappointed if you take advantage of the vibrant Asian shopping, dining,
or cultural events. You will be fascinated when you pass by homes of famous residents you’ll immediately recognize,
such as Bruce Lee (martial arts), Rodney Yee (yoga) or Amy Tan (author).
Lake Merritt
What do the numbers 126 and 3400 mean to you? That’s the number of lampposts and bulbs you can see
in the necklace of lights that encircle Lake Merritt. Lake Merritt is significant for more than its
pearly bulbs, for in 1870 it became the first official wildlife refuge in the United States. Visitors
can enjoy a ride in a gondola, fresh produce at one of its farmers’ markets, or simply view the largest
(3.4 miles around) fresh water-sea lake within an urban area.
USS Potomac
History buffs, party planners, and cruisers can sail on a National Historic Landmark on San Francisco Bay
when they step aboard the USS Potomac. The Potomac, FDR’s yacht, is one of only three remaining presidential yachts.
Chabot Space and Science
Leah, Rachel, and Nellie await your visit to this Smithsonian-affiliate space and science center. In case you didn’t know, Leah is
the site’s original and oldest (1883) refractor telescope; while Rachel is the largest refractor telescope open to the public this
side of the Mississippi. Come and enjoy digital-dome planetarium shows, giant screen MegaDome shows, and interactive exhibitions
about our Universe.
Oakland Aviation Museum (Formerly Western Aerospace Museum)
If you or anyone you know is an airplane buff, you’ve come to the right place. Who wouldn’t want to see a giant
flying boat, an Electra resembling Amelia Earhart’s aircraft, or more than thirty other airplanes old and new?
If you’re early enough on Father’s Day, you might even get a photo of yourself sitting a real cockpit!
UCLA Berkeley
What do Earl Warren, Steve Wozniak, Governor Jerry Brown, Robert McNamara, and Gregory Peck have in common? They are
all distinguished alumni from UCLA Berkeley. Plaudits don’t stop with them: Berkeley’s collective thirty-two libraries
make up the fourth largest academic library in the United States. No place has more distinguished graduate programs listed
in the top ten by the US National Research Council than Berkeley. No other university has discovered as many as sixteen
chemical elements as Berkeley Lab. If that’s not enough reason to visit the campus, have your photograph taken at South
Hall, built in 1873 and now considered the oldest university building in California. Feel young now?
Oakland Zoo
Many visitors say they like the Oakland Zoo better than the larger San Francisco Zoo. Maybe that’s because Oakland’s
animals look so healthy and happy or the location is just easier to find. The zoo boasts almost 700 native and exotic
animals kept in mostly “natural” habitats. This space will expand to 54 Acres by 2015. Don’t miss the excellent elephant
exhibit or animals that can be seen from above by a “ride in the sky”.
